However, in the studio things can change, and must be able to adapt quickly to this scenario is presented. Here are the basic boundaries for uses voice.

Only

It is himself. You would be called because the sound, style and training has made you best for what the composer wants to hear. Some singers session only solo, but most soloists also learn to perform as a singer. They are more versatile and learn to blend with the voices around them.

Duo

A duo can be composed of two people singing together regularly, or perhaps a combination of voice similar or dissimilar. It depends on what the composer wants. The votes are selected for their ability to blend, or perhaps for their style but not free-mixing. For example, men and women, or a hoarse voice and other sweet. The key to recognize that as a duet of two persons are required to create a duet form, an individual “personality” of the song or marker. Most of the time are recorded duets together, but again, we must be ready for anything in the studio. Though a duo, there may be times when one voice would be recorded separately and then the second voice work with this performance at a different time in the same session.

Group (3-8) and group (9 +)

The next level recognized by the code of the union of both AFTRA and SAG is the group singing of a group of singers from 3 to less than 80. Both designations are the group 3-8, and 9 more. Trios, quartets, quintets and fall into the 3-8 category, but most often after DUO groups become singers set of 9 or more. This is generally choir, and can cover the styles of gospel, song, or classical, jazz choir or ethnic style imaginable.

The deadline for a session

Sessions can last for hours and can be recorded over several days, but there is always a minimum period of a singer who is paid. With AFTRA is a minimum of 2 hours wages with SAG and the minimum is 4 under the TV and movie codes. The non-union labor has no minimum and the singer (s) must negotiate.

There may not even be any accompaniment. At times like these the singers ‘chops’ (abilities) have to be even more tightly honed since the only thing that is heard is the voice.
