Tickets MGMT – The Band returns with a less Electric

It is difficult to deny that 2008 was a year big enough for MGMT. Composed primarily of Andrew Van Wyngarden and Ben Goldwasser Martin, listeners shimmering layers of trippy synths seduced the indie-pop through radio and the blogosphere. More importantly, their critical success translated into dollars. MGMT’s debut album, Oracular Spectacular, peaked at number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers and classified on the British charts, as well. It was generally considered one of the best releases of the year, and they have been nominated for a Grammy for best new artist in 2010.

band’s songs, including “Kids,” “Time To Pretend” and “Electric Feel”, were all played and fans whet appetites for whatever came next for the band. Unfortunately, these desires could not be sated soon enough, and in early 2010 some fans too impatient fled their upcoming record, Congratulations, before the release date of April 13. In response, the group decided to hear the full album on their website, www. whoismgmt. com. Above the buttons is streaming the message, “Hi everybody, the album was available, and we wanted you to be able to hear us. We wanted to offer a free download but it don ‘ no sense to anyone but us. ”

It’s a shame that the record secretly doors, but this is probably not going to keep people from buying an album that is irresistibly catchy, so amazingly different. Whereas Oracular Spectacular is dense and glossy, Congratulations MGMT is much more moderate. They overwhelmed their listeners with synthesizers before, now it’s just an instrument used to produce the most optimism, garage rock atmosphere. The group has retained much of its psychedelic psychedelic, with lots of distortion and reverb, especially on the vocals, which often seem to be the echo of a cave.

But this is not a scary journey they take you. Songs like “Someone’s Missing” are always enthusiastic at times, but if their last record was a celebration with banners, whistles and drums, it is the quiet joy that comes back home after all.

The group said they do not think they will release singles from the album, but if they do “Flash Delirium” is probably the first. The infectious song is a journey, with the support of organ and choral voices behind the voice of Van Wyngarden. The rock becomes more wild as the song progresses, ending in a point that leaves you high and want to hear it again.

One of the pleasures of the coolest on record is in the garage-punk “Brian Eno,” an ode to the white head, high priest of witchcraft strange studio. “I can say it is kind of smile / but what does he know? (What does he know?) / We’re always one step behind him is Brian Eno! Van Wyngarden sings on a track that is pop certainly more than anything Brian Eno never touched, but it is a fitting tribute nonetheless.

When the tape heads on tour, you’ll want to check out their new music. Grab tickets at StubHub MGMT.
