NYU Film School: A Review

I received a BA in film production from NYUâ???? S Tisch School of the Arts. Â As someone who also participated in the USCA???? S Film School and have taken courses at UCLA???? S film program, I thought I could offer some good perspective of what I thought of each and begin with I spent the most time, NYU.

The Place

NYUâ???? S School of Cinema is located in Greenwich Village on Manhattan Island in New York. Â Going to school in such an urban location offers both positive and negative. Â On a positive note, New York City is your campus and therefore you are in the mix of all the endless cafes, shops, famous places, neighborhoods and interesting iconic New York officials that the city is famous for. Â On the negative side, too, New York City is your campus so that you donâ???? T â???? Experiencer Campus protected???? you have to school with a closed campus dedicated. Â

In my opinion, I looked at life, take classes and make movies in New York to be a huge advantage. Â Where can I get such a source of inspiration and material to draw in one of the largest cities in the world. Â The only downside would be if you want to leave the city to shoot or just to get some peace and quiet away from the bustle of the city. Â Itâ???? S hard to keep a car in the city without spending a fortune, but the subways and trains can take you almost anywhere you need to go at an affordable price.

The curriculum of the

NYU Film School???? S curriculum consists of classes in all major areas of the production process. Â There are classes in sound, editing, writing, television technology and group classes where you finally make films together in small teams. Â In general, when you move through the program of projects you work on become more complex. Â In the early classes that you could film 8mm black and white or short videos. Â

As you progress you make longer and more complex projects and can choose between the experimental or narrative films. Â In general, students receive a certain amount of tape or film stock and basic equipment such as lights and trucks that would be needed. Â If a student wishes to do something that requires more complex accessories and / or equipment, then they need to provide the funds themselves. Â In general, all students who wish may direct their own movies with other students as crew members on their films, and vice versa.

NYU has a good selection of material. It is not always the latest technology and technology changes so often, especially when it comes to video, but in general you Wona???? T miss for anything. Â They have enough material to mount running of old Steenbeck splicing film to use computer systems for the final version of Adobe Premier. Â Again, if a student wants to take more pictures that the school is willing to provide a film or video the student may pay for the additional development, etc.

Teachers

In general, I found teachers to be competent in some???? Exceptional???? At the thrown in. They are all professionals who work with a little more success than others. Â In some classes, you also have guest speakers and alumni may teach a class known as Spike Lee or Woody Allen. Â

Each week, the school hosts film screenings and filmmaker or the film’s producers show up to discuss with the class and answer questions about how the film was developed and the story behind the making of film. Â These are excellent opportunities for networking with old and often successful alumni of the program out to look at these projections are an excellent way to network.

After Graduation.

When I felt the NYU Film Program fell a little short was in the planning and career management. Â They na???? T spend a lot of time to teach you how to build a career after graduation. Â This is one of the faults I found in most programs of the film. Â Fortunately, many NYU graduates working in the industry that if you are proactive, you should easily find success graduates willing to sit down and talk with you about your â???? After graduationâ???? game plan. Â

In recent years the school has been good in strengthening his former organization active on both the east and west coasts to know if you decide to be based in New York or Los Angeles, you can use this resource create a network for yourself which is very important. Â

Overall, I found the NYU Film School to be a good experience for those who want a broad education in various aspects of film before embarking on a career. A film school, so it can be an excellent starting point for some people is not right for everyone. Â There are lots of things to consider before spending time and money on a film school. Free Money to invest in film projects

Did you know that you can immediately deduct the cost of qualified film productions? When coupled with the incentives offered by the state film production, the initial results of 50-70% of your investment can be achieved in the first year.

Section 181Previously, some film production costs were recoverable through depreciation deductions over a period of several years. However, the 2004 Tax Act added a new section 181 of the Internal Revenue Code that allows a current deduction for the cost of “qualified film or television,” the year of expenditure. For any What film or television production qualified beginning before January 1, 2010, a taxpayer may elect to deduct an amount not to exceed a total cost of $ 15,000,000. The requirement is increased to $ 20,000,000 if a significant amount of production expenses are incurred in areas eligible for designation as a low-income community or may be designated by the Delta Regional Authority as a distressed county or isolated area distress. A production is considered to begin on the date of the first principal photography. The cost “global” of a qualified film or television production may include all costs previously capitalized should be such that (a development costs), (b) general and administrative expenses, (c) depreciation of assets used in production, and (d financing costs). A person or company who invests in article 181 eligible productions can claim a deduction of 100% of their investment on their passive income in the year their investment was made. A deduction may be made against active income should the investment be made by or through the intermediary a widely held company C. originally to end December 31, 2008, the deduction has been extended by TARP to December 31, 2009. The investments must be made before that date and the money invested in eligible productions must be spent by the productions. For additional specific information on Section 181 See below.

Example of section 181 DeductionFor example, if a person or entity that is taxed at a tax rate of 35% passive income to take a deduction, then that person should make an investment in a $ 10,000 eligible production or fund films, the actual net investment will be $ 6,500 because they can take a full deduction only $ 10,000 against their passive income, and 35% of $ 10,000 is $ 3,500, which is the value of the deduction they can do in the year they make their investment. A number of State Production IncentivesMany offer various incentives to film and video production. These can take the form of cash payments, tax credits, tax abatements, and the waiver or reduction of sales and other taxes. Some credits are transferable to other commercial entities. Each state is different, but generally the production company must; • Meet spend some criteria • Meeting with a minimum amount is spent in approved • State • Submit documents applicable processAfter • Spend a production audit is completed and all conditions of the requirements State are met, the state then issues a refund in the form of a check, credit or refund. For more information on some additional specific individual States see below.

Example of State Filing IncentiveIn New Mexico (NM), which is considered a state level by a film industry tax credit of 25% for all expenses of production and work is given. There is no minimum amount. If that same person making $ 10,000 investment in an eligible production in Nm, then the actual net investment will be $ 7,500 because they receive a tax credit against the cash totaling $ 10,000 spent in the State . Example of Federal and State Film Incentives CombinedIn the above two examples a person makes an investment of $ 10,000 in film production qualified. Section 181 deduction the first year against the taxes of $ 3,500. Since the production was filmed in New Mexico, the state has paid a tax credit to the individual an amount of $ 2500. Together these total $ 6,000. It follows an immediate return on investment of 60% to the individual ($ 6k is 605% of $ 10k). More details of Section 181 also allows 181Section all other recourse debt costs which are usually associated with film finance, film $ 10 million, where only $ 3. 5 million shares, the investor can deduct $ 3. 5 million dollars against 10 million dollars, especially if the latter is mezzanine or gap finance. A qualified film or television can be a movie (either released to theaters or directly to video cassette or other format), a mini-series, a script, the dramatic episode of television or film of the week. In the case of a television series, only the first 44 episodes may be eligible. Sexually explicit productions are excluded. To qualify for the deduction, 75 percent of total compensation for production must be “qualified compensation” means compensation for services rendered to the United States by actors, directors, producers and other production staff concerned. It is not necessary that the individual is a U.S. citizen or resident. However, compensation does not include participations and residuals. If the election to deduct the cost is made, no other deductions for depreciation or amortization in respect of qualified film or television production is allowed. Only the owner of qualified film or television production that pays the cost can take the deduction section 181. However, it is not necessary that the owner is actual producer of the production. Thus, even if the owner can outsource production to another entity, so long as the owner retains the ownership of production, capital must always be available. In addition, it can be several owners of production. In this case, each owner would be allowed a deduction by the amount of his contributions. Application of Article 181 of the production activity DeductionThe should be a trade “or” business therefore, section 181 deduction would be subject to the rules on the loss of passive income. / The individuals and corporations for personal services that are not “materially participate” in an activity (regular, continuous and substantial participation of activity) can deduct passive losses in the extent of “passive income.” Passive income generally includes income from real estate and other investment liabilities, revenues and includes film, television, etc. occurred. Unused passive losses may be carried forward and deducted from income liabilities in the years following, or may be deducted from ordinary income if the loss is “liberated” (ie, through sale or divestiture of the assets liabilities). This principle applies even if the gain were future capital gain long term. Therefore, in the first year of production, production costs would be deductible for the taxpayer under section 181, but only against passive income. Any excess of the deduction (or loss) would be deferred and could be used to offset income stream constant of the material produced. Presumably, if the materials produced were sold in the same year as the costs have been incurred, the amount withheld may be offset against the passive income from the gain on sale. If the materials produced were sold in a subsequent taxation year, the taxpayer may request a postponement of the first year losses against ordinary income and are equally entitled to treatment of capital gains from the sale of material produced. If this equipment is held for more than a year from the date of completion, the capital gain will be a capital gain in the long term. There are no special rates for corporate gains, but if the taxpayer was an individual, the rate of investment in long-term gain would be 15% under current law. Potential limitations on the operation or effect of section 181 deduction under the taxation laws in force may include “risk Rules” (under which a taxpayer may claim a deduction for direct investment and borrowed amounts for which the taxpayer is ultimately responsible direct action), the alternative minimum tax (as if the production activity constitutes a trade or business (for individuals) or is deductible in the calculation of “earnings and profits “(companies) the deduction should not trigger the alternative minimum tax) and established case law regarding the ability of the Internal Revenue Service overhaul of a transaction based on the doctrine of substance over form in a way that would eliminate the tax benefits. Effective for films placed in service after October 22, 2004, taxpayers can choose, on a film by film, to finally adopt one of two approaches to the deduction of participations and residuals for the movie. Participations and residuals are amounts that “contract varies with the amount of income earned in connection with” the film (for example, to pay on gross receipts, premiums or box office). The taxpayer may choose to increase the adjusted tax basis of the film by the amount of residual interests and ultimately the taxpayer may be required based on estimated revenue of the film during the first decade after the film is placed in service. Furthermore, the taxpayer may elect to deduct the participations and residuals when paid.

Partial exclusion of income for films produced in the U.S.

Additional features of the State Film Production Incentive Tier One StatesNew Mexico: a tax credit of 25% for all production expenses and labor of New Mexico. The provisions have caused some concern that the demand exceeds the labor, but a subsidiary of NBC Universal has recently opened the largest shop equipment in west LA for television, film and commercial productions . Massachusetts: The state provides a credit of 25% for production costs exceeding 50% of the total production cost ($ 7 million maximum). For production companies in Massachusetts, and corporate income tax credit of duty is available, equal to 20% of production payroll (excluding payroll over $ 1 million) and 100% sales tax exemption. Connecticut: The state provides a credit of 30% for production costs. The equipment brought into the state are eligible, provided it is used in the state. Louisiana: A 25% credit on all expenditures, including the work of non-residents for work performed in the state and a credit of 35% of payroll for Louisiana residents. An additional credit of 40% may apply to infrastructure projects. The second component StatesNorth Carolina: An overall tax credit, offsetting purchases, leases in the state and wages paid to residents and non-residents for work performed in the state, seemed to put this state in the first component. Illinois: A 20% tax credit transferable to state labor and expenses, has led to an increase in film and television work. In addition, the state waives a 14. 9% Tax bed hotel, if held for 30 days. Already in depth the work of talented and highly skilled, the credit seems to create more work. New York: A new tax credit of 5% of the city adds to the state tax credit of 10% and backdrops unique and historic help to overcome rising costs and work in New York. Hawaii: Weather, fixing and refundable tax incentives to help overcome the limited size of the local team. The state offers a 15% credit for a minimum of $ 200,000 in production costs on the island of Oahu, from 20% for work on small islands. Alternatively, a separate vote of 100% is available for investors. Florida Weather Britain and talented local teams, are offset by a credit less generous and the hurricane season. How your music licensed for the use of television and film of your site

Get your licensed music for use in television and movies from your site.

It is possible that in our time, any musician “can get their music licensed. As a “musician” (in quotes), which can mean anyone fluent in the world of Garage Band, anyone able to chain loops or someone who plays an instrument for leisure and can record with a decent quality.

The company home recording studio has prospered in recent years and almost anyone who wants to can save a piece of music with a decent quality. Every Mac comes with Garage Band now included in the software.

So with all this semi-new technology used by the common man mortal, their influence on the industry of the license has been noticed. It was a challenge to make a career in music licensing. Now it is almost impossible. of my good friends who were the “jingle” in the past now are seeking other opportunities to earn income. The competition is so fierce.

Now, I have been in this field in recent years and have obtained some licensed tracks on VH1, MTV, Bravo and others. . . but the license fees are much lower than they were. Free music has enabled buyers to get decent music for their productions and not worry about paying a large amount of money for it.

Once I launched my site free of royalties in 2003, I intended to make music on any website accessible to any person he wanted. It sounds good, but with a website, just to be on the web does not guarantee sales. appropriate avenues of promotion must be taken to get your site noticed. 1. Having a site that works 100% – no broken links or glitches. No. “Under Construction” Pages 2. Have as much content as possible – stay away from heavy flash sites oriented 3. Submit manually to all major search engines and directories. I have not found a submission service that I trust yet, if I find one I’ll let you know. 4. Daily updates of your content 5. Get the “quality” of reciprocal links to your site. As I mean sites that are PR4 and above and have content that relates to your site.

These five steps are the first baby steps get music seen by the public on your site. Following this advice will get quality hits to your site and tracks a lot.

Louisiana Film Tax Credit legislation deserves support

Fortunately most of Louisiana legislators, including Governor Bobby Jindal, see tax credits as an important part of the state???? the economy and pressure to expand the program. Jindal said he would support extending the current 25 percent tax credits for film extra two years and 5 years on infrastructure credits. Jindal also supports eliminating the 2009 deadline for the Digital Media Production Tax Credit, a program for the development of video games, animation and special effects. And since legislators seem to agree on continuing the debate moves to the question of what the future should look like for the tax credit program? Among the factors being discussed during the debate on the future of Louisianaâ???? Incentive Program for the film are: * Louisiana’s incentive structure created Motion Picture Act allows film producers to state for tax credits on their products to Louisiana and skilled labor costs. These tax credits can be converted into cash and help make a film based productions Louisiana more lucrative for producers and investors. The percentages and use of tax credits are something that the legislature should examine it carefully to ensure that the program remains competitive. * Financial impact of the film industry Cinema has become an important economic engine for Louisiana. Reports on the state Film Office that Louisiana has taken over $ 2 billion in revenues and $ 200 million in payroll generated by the film and television between 2002 and 2008. * Infrastructure development key support film productions of films no longer continue to take place in Louisiana a solid infrastructure related film has taken root across the state. These include post-production services, staffing, finance and even special education programs is now statewide. * Impact of a deteriorating economy, like most states, Louisiana is facing a budget deficit for 2009. Declining state revenues makes it more difficult to extend the tax incentives in times of economic downturn. However, the potential decrease in jobs or revenue from film and television is more concern for state officials. * Increased pressure from other states on the success of Louisianaâ???? State film program of the other are now trying to compete in this sector and have begun to offer incentives of their own. States like Georgia and Michigan have “raised the stakes” in setting tax credit to higher levels has already been done before. It is a great debate in the Member States, whether or not this is financially viable, but the net effect has been greater competition. FBT Film & Entertainment would like to see the film tax credits extended in their current state. While other states have established programs with greater reductions Louisiana has many other factors that contribute to leveling the game, including unique places, strong film infrastructure, highly qualified staff and ongoing support of the state and local officials.
