Apple released the iPhone to much hype and fanfare. He charged the device three devices in one. It was a revolutionary product for the cell phone industry. But the iPhone is having an effect outside of the mobile phone and computer. In fact, we believe that history will show release of the iPhone as one of the greatest single events in the history of independent cinema. What, exactly, does the iPhone – a mobile internet device / / widescren iPod – have to do with indie film? Well, a lot. The movie download market must prepare for a major new phase as we look forward to more and more devices capable of playing our content. For independent content to survive and prosper, it must go to devices such as delivery of new Apple TV, iPod and now iPhone. Support for these new aircraft will allow the growth of the audience for indie content. Many mainstream consumers will not watch indie films for screenings, festivals or DVD. The films are too difficult to find, often barried on video rental store shelves or playing in small art house cinemas. This was the case for decades. Once every five years, there is an escape touched – a clerk or Blair Witch – which gives the community something to rally indie. The independent film release said, “We have arrived. It is the” Year of the “Indie”. Just as quickly as these visits occur, the excitement dies down and the content made large following is lost in the shuffle.
